There is some visible progress on the book and some of you have updated and even shared the current state of the chapters.

Still, most of the chapters remain on the "Todo" state.

I would like to ask you a few concrete things:

  1. Please update the cards on the Trello board according to the state of your chapter, if you have not done so
  2. Provide me with information if you will be able to provide a final draft for review of your chapter until June 15th (please check the book chapter guidelines) and, if not, when you would be able to do so
  3. Do you have the need for more guidance or support on writing your book chapter?

Furthermore, I use the opportunity to answer a few questions posed by Susanne.

I put a lot of effort into the documentation of the course which is online on the platform, also because I understood this was what should be published at the end. It is still a network on degrowth learning and thus methodologies, right?

Yes, GROWL is still a network on degrowth learning and that includes the methodologies. The online materials are the main source for the process of commons-based peer production that we want to keep alive after the 2-years of the GROWL funded partnership.

The book is an additional deliverable that we have as part of the project, and which aims at providing an overview of the different modules and courses that happened in this 2 project years. It is therefore based to a large extent on the modules and materials already published online, but it must obviously deal with other constraints and also is targeting a somehow different group.

My suggestion would be that the documentation of the Leipzig course will be the core of the book chapter and Christoph is willing to write a longer theroretical introduction (2-3 pages) to it which explains our approach and understanding of mental infrastructures of growth to meet more your ideas of a chapter.

This should be ok. You should make sure that the whole content is not exceeding 70000 characters.

What is the goal of the book?

Within the last editorial meetings, we have decided for example to provide the readers of the books with a somewhat more lively report of what happened in these 2 years of courses, rather than just editing a book of theory and methodologies - because that can be better found and used from other books or on this online platform.

Is it going to be printed and published? Where and how?

The book will be printed and published. We originally planned to print 500 to 1000 books, which would then be distributed among the partners according to their percentual contributions to the common fund.

A suggestion from R&D came to actually contract with a publisher to have a better outreach. This is option is currently being explored by François and Federico.

Pictures are also an important element to add. Would be great if you all could make a selection of a few high-quality pictures to include in the book. We want to visualize the courses and our temporary-permanent communities formed there :)

Dear all,

I would like to write on behalf for the Witzenhausen Orgateam. We cannot provide any material to the bok until the deadline. I stated this in the last phone call with you very clear, that we can just provide material until 15th of August.

It is a real pity, since we had an professional photograph, a "real" degrowth food supply and managed really to form a comunity during our course.

Since our topic and therefore the course was much more process-based than content-based it is not possible to provide beforehand materials like the portuguese team does.

We have now our experiences, but still need to evaluate them, get materials both from participants and referentes and also measure the food, since we make a scientific approach on the food supply in general.

This all needs time, what we dont have right after our course, even though most of us worked since 3 weeks without any break or weekend.

I think this is also degrowth to be realistic on what is reachable and what not.

I am very sorry. If it is possible, I could write an outline but just the headlines and how many pages and boxes and pictures we will provide. Any content is not possible at this moment.

What are we going to do?

Hello all,

I'll try to write later in detail but for now i wanted to say that anyway who interested to get some pictures, can get some pictures from the videos, the image quality will be 1920x1080 and 72 dpi which will be enough to get some pictures -not for big printing but it's possible to use the extracted images from the video. So if anyone want and have time to get some pictures from the videos that we have are wellcome ;)

Ciao.

We are unfortunately relatively under pressure by the project deadline. GROWL officially ends on July 31st and the book is one of the deliverables we have in the project. If we don't manage to have it published until then, we will have to report that we didn't and that might bring us problems in getting the remaining 20% of the money.

I am sure we can still get to have a nice book. François and Electre have worked quite a lot in it during the course in Witzenhausen, and most partners have reported to me that they will send a final draft by June 15th. For Witzenhausen we can see - maybe a more person based report, together with some interesting literature (e.g. the history of the youth movement from Sabine). It is probably possible to involve in this phase after the course, where people are still connected, a few people to write texts collaboratively - define the content objective, set a time and bring them into etherpads. Then with the 2000 pictures of Burkado should become a nice chapter within a few weeks.

We might want to also consider making a Book Sprint immediately after the GROWL course in Portugal. We have there 3 days between the end of the course and the caravan. It would be intensive and demanding, but we do want to get our book out, right?

Anyway, I think the beginning of next week we should have an editorial meeting. Could you please state your availability until Saturday evening?

Dear all,

I will post a short outline now on the course page of community building to be commented and worked on within the next 2 weeks collaborativly.

But still we will not finish.

the 3 days between course and caravan sounds reasanable for me, as long as we have a cool room to work in:P

I want to state that I am very motivated as well as the others from the witzenhausen course to get a good documentation, it is just the lack of time.

See you!

we are just missing the methodological part and the photos and is ready

i am attaching a draft version for your consideration

if you have texts for specific case studies from your countries please send them as soon as possible, as none of the international groups provided texts for case studies during the course

Hi everybody,

as the deadline is today we have to admit that the Austrian crew will not make it. We are a bit overburdened as now there is only the two of us (Martin and Maike, Julianna is on the alp).

What we will try to do is to write an introduction to the topic and collect as much of the material we planned to collect until the Portugese course.

Also both of us cannot take part in the meeting on Wednesday.

What I did however, is to get some smaller paragraphs from the think-about to put in boxes along the texts. I will try to upload the file here.

all the best

Hello lovely humans of GROWL!

We have the main chunk of the text for Degroth & Agriculture ready:

https://co-munity.net/node/2002066

There's still some space for a list of related books and films that I'm reformatting at the moment. And if I could take a few more days I could add a short text about the GROWL@PL experience and place. This would give a nice subjective touch to the whole text. Also I need to select a few photos.

Kisses!

Thank you for your prompt replies! This time communication seems to be working really well.

Now I'm just missing updated information from Czech Republic (Eva/Nikola) and some confirmation on deliverability of the introductory part of the Wachstumswende module (Thomas/Susanne/Kristina)

Also a few comments:

  • some documents seem to have images/schemes - in order to be able to integrate these in the book, we need to make sure that they have an open license (e.g. Creative Commons, Public Domain) and also that they have a good resolution for printing. Images integrated in office documents are problematic for us to work it, so make sure to get all files separated
  • it would be really good if François(se) could join the book editorial meeting tomorrow at 10 AM, since the theoretical part has the most complex distribution across the book and the designer will also be there to discuss how things can/should look like
  • I will propose that by next week all documents are publicly available (or at least for all members) on the trainers area, so that I can engage more people in the reviewing and have a better overview of the whole book. This implies that: a) there should be no copyrighted material; and b) tables, images and non-standard rich text formatting will appear differently (e.g. images probably attached). If you have problems in having your content open next week, please inform in advance

Thanks for your great work and looking forward to talk to some of you tomorrow at 10:00.
