The Role of Intention in Action

Alexander Nehamas. Friedrich Nietzsche on Truth and Human Action

weitere Informationen

If we can’t know what our experiences and actions actually are, then it seems that we can’t ever know whether they are products of our intentions or events over which we have no control. In addition to the epistemological nihilism this lecture will discuss another kind of nihilism: the practical nihilism, which has also been attributed to him. To understand what Nietzsche really thinks, we will examine his understanding of the relationship between intention and action, which differs radically from most contemporary treatments of the issue. Contrary to current philosophy, Nietzsche argues that our actions are not caused by our intentions, whose role in the explanation of action is not causal but, in a sense, hermeneutic.
