Intention, Action, Responsibility

Alexander Nehamas. Friedrich Nietzsche on Truth and Human Action

weitere Informationen

Moral philosophy insists that whether an action is right or wrong depends on the intention with which it was undertaken. Moral responsibility, accordingly, depends on whether one intended to perform the action for which one is held responsible. But if intentions, as Nietzsche believes, are not the causes of our actions, how is responsibility to be assigned? Needless to say, Nietzsche is not interested in moral responsibility in the first place; still, it is difficult to believe that he rejects every notion of responsibility for what we are. The final lecture will try to show that even Nietzsche’s views on action and responsibility are most radical, like his views on truth, they’re not only reasonable but actually correct.
